Beethoven – a work in progress…
The public lecture series organised by the Department of Musicology at Detmold will be dedicated to Ludwig van Beethoven during the winter semester of 2026/27, to mark the 200th anniversary of his death. The academic project ‘Beethoven’s Workshop: Genetic Textual Criticism and Digital Music Edition’, based at the Musicology Seminar Detmold/Paderborn and the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, is organising this semester’s lecture series, focusing on various aspects of Beethoven’s creative process and its analysis. The lectures will not only examine the composer’s creative thinking as revealed in Beethoven’s manuscripts, but will also consider the conditions that shaped subsequent engagement with his work: Insights into the history of Beethoven collections and the study of sketches provide an impression of the sources used and the conditions under which research into Beethoven’s creative process takes place. The series concludes with a presentation of the first digital edition of a sketchbook, produced as part of the ‘Beethoven’s Workshop’ project. All interested parties are warmly invited.
The public lectures take place every fortnight on Wednesdays from 6.15 pm in the Kuppelsaal at the HfM Detmold (Willi-Hofmann-Str. 5).
